Suzuki GSXR 1000, 185bhp
water-cooled, four-cylinder engine.



Significantly oversquare, the 74.5 mm bore and 57.3 mm stroke engine, just a single cube shy of a liter at 999 cc, produces 185bhp. It features forged pistons designed using Suzuki's Finite Element Method (FEM) and fatigue analysis technology for light weight and high revs. The Suzuki Composite Electrochemical Material (SCEM) treatment in the cylinder walls helps to actually increase power by decreasing friction, as well as increasing ring sealing and waste heat transfer to the water jacket. Vents in the sides of the cylinder bores relieve crankcase pressure to reduce pumping losses.

An electronic Engine Control Module manages the engine, and enables the use of Suzuki’s Drive Mode Selector (S-DMS) that comes with three separate performance profiles that allow the driver to tailor power delivery to suit his or her tastes, or the prevailing conditions. It also manages the Suzuki Exhaust Tuning (SET) valve that provides variable back pressure in the exhaust system for a broader torque band, a metric that also benefits from the 12.9-to-1 compression ratio and specially shaped combustion chambers.

A six-speed, constant-mesh transmission keeps the engine in the usable powerband with a hydraulic slip-and-assist clutch that works to prevent wheel locking-up during aggressive downshifts.


Lightweight, durable forged pistons are designed with the Finite Element Method (FEM) and fatigue analysis technology used for MotoGP racing engines.

Suzuki Composite Electrochemical Material (SCEM)-plated cylinders integrated into the upper crankcase reduce friction and improve heat transfer, durability and ring seal.

Pentagonal shaped ventilation holes in the sides of each cylinder bore reduce pumping losses due to internal crankcase air-pressure resistance to downward piston movement.

Optimized camshaft profiles for great racing potential was developed using proven MotoGP racing engine technology.

Optimally shaped combustion chambers and a compression ratio of 12.9:1 promote low-range and mid-range performance and help realise a broad torque curve.

Iridium spark plugs produce a strong spark for efficient combustion.

12-hole fuel injectors produce a fine fuel mist for more complete combustion, reducing fuel consumption and exhaust emissions.

An Engine Control Module (ECM) provides state-of-the-art engine management and has optimized settings to suit the single muffler, resulting in better fuel economy and linear throttle response.

The 4-2-1 exhaust system carries a Suzuki Exhaust Tuning (SET) valve maximizing torque and improving throttle response, especially in the low-to-mid rpm range.

Race-proven back-torque-limiting clutch contributes to smoother downshifting and corner entry.
